have landed on these shores, and made Nice a home-from-home.
It was the British aristocracy, followed by the French and Russians that led the dash to the Riviera in the early 19th century. Having found a kind of paradise they previously only knew through books and stories, they set about building winter residences with the standards they used for their palaces at home. These buildings inspired a renaissance of architecture in the city that is known as the belle epoque period.
The unique charm that lured the wealthy and powerful of-the-day, 200 years ago, is the same charm that makes the Riviera one of the most popular tourist resorts in the world today. Year-round sunshine, incredible scenery and the unique
French quality of life make Nice the natural destination for travellers wanting to get away from it all.
